It was time for a new liner for my pool so I figured it was time to repair and refinish my steps as well. My steps had the usual spongy feeling when you walked on them, and had developed a few minor cracks. Like many others I asked my local pool store about repairing the steps with the liner and they quoted me $1800. The liner was already $5000, so I decided to seek an alternative for the steps. I found this repair kit from Olympia here on Amazon, but wasn’t sure I had the skills to do it, but for a $1500 dollar savings, I went for it.I have to say this kit provides almost everything you need. I won’t say it’s easy because it took about 4 days to complete, but the instructions were easy to follow, and I never felt over my head.A few things to consider. If you are repairing your steps due to sponginess and cracking like me, you will need to fix that problem before using the kit. I filled the voids under my steps using spray foam. It’s much easier and efficient than trying to refill with sand. You drill holes and spray in the foam. Repair the holes with the enamel puddy included in this kit. There is a good video on YouTube from Reg’s Channel that gives you a good tutorial. I ended up using 3 cans, one for each step. You may need more depending on your steps. After that you just follow the steps of the kit.A few tips. The kit only provides 2 sheets of sandpaper. Sanding the steps, as well as sanding the repairs will take you forever. I used my orbital sander with an air compressor for all the flat spots, and sponge sandpaper blocks for harder to get to areas. It still took a couple hours. You might also want to invest in a dremel tool. It’s was very helpful in widening the cracks and drill holes for the puddy to get in. Also useful for removing puddy from hard to sand places. The paint is really thick. It only took like one pass with the roller to get coverage. Despite this I got some runs. The stairs looked great when completed. No runs. But over night runs formed. I’m guessing because the paint is so thick it settles slow. Don’t know how to avoid this. I’ve decided to just leave it. Most will be under water, and it’s not really noticeable. You can see from the pictures taken approximately 30 minutes after painting that there are is no running in the paint, and then the next morning the runs. (Sorry about all the stuff around the steps. Keeping the dogs off the steps)The instructions give varying dry times depending on temperature. I let my steps dry for 8 days just to make sure. I covered them with a tarp after about 5 days due to rain. Better safe than sorry.Plan several days of work, and at least a week of dry weather. Each step has curing times. Spray foam, and puddy need overnight before moving to next step. Sanding took another day. And prep magic needs to completely dry before painting.Overall I’m really satisfied with this product. I saved tons of money, and it looks like brand new. Pretty much anyone with DYI skills and a few tools can do it. Great product. Hope the tips help.
